Security basics

What is SSL and why does your website need it?

SSL protects data moving between a visitor's browser and your website. When it is working correctly, the site loads over HTTPS.

What SSL protects

Encryption helps prevent data in transit from being read or changed by someone intercepting the connection. It is a basic requirement for modern websites, especially login, form, and checkout pages.

What SSL does not do

An SSL certificate does not make a hacked plugin safe, create backups, remove malware, or replace website security practices.

Hosting and SSL

Many hosts include certificates. Bluehost currently lists Let's Encrypt SSL on its WordPress plans. After setup, test that HTTP addresses redirect correctly to HTTPS and that site resources do not trigger mixed content errors.
